Health sector being restructured by mobile technology
It was while thinking about how mobile devices have revolutionised our lives that I stumbled across an article that claimed the health sector is undergoing changes to the way it operates. This is thanks to mobile technology that can utilise health-related apps, providing exciting challenges for healthcare website designers.
The smartphone is leading the way in this revolution, whereby apps can help people to get fit, have access to coaching, medical diagnoses, and if this trend continues, even become substitute doctors.
The technology industry is investing a great deal of its time and money into developing digital health resources, with the smaller companies focussing more on the app market and the larger firms looking into ways they can address the issues of health and general wellness.
There are many apps currently on the market that measure blood pressure, glucose levels and heart rate, with the big names of Samsung, Apple and Google launching digital platforms which will enable the easier integration of medical and health services.
Gerry Purdy, an analyst at Compass Intelligence, said: “We've gotten to a point where with sensors either in the phone or wearables gather information that we couldn't do in the past without going to a medical center. You can do the heart rate, mobile EKGs (electrocardiograms). Costs are coming down, and these sensors are becoming more socially acceptable.”
The worldwide consultancy, Deloitte, meanwhile have estimated that smart devices, such as the Google Glass, fitness bands and fitness watches, will reach sales levels of 10 million units by the end of 2014, rising to 170 million by 2017, proving that there is plenty of scope for health-related mobile technology to develop.
